Mapping the Republic: 1790-1900Mapping the Republic is a traveling exhibition from the Osher Map Library at the University of Southern Maine. It includes twenty panels of map reproductions arranged chronologically in the Museum and adjacent hallway. These maps help chronical the growth of the United States from its ocean-bound, colonial beginnings, through independence and into a powerful nation stretching across the continent. Materials from the University of New Hampshire Archives and Special Collections and UNH Thompson School augment the Osher map exhibit. Additions include: surveying instruments used in Durham from the 19th Century through the mid-20th Century and reproductions of Durham area maps to illustrate the products of local surveys; as well as representative 18th and 19th century New Hampshire maps. The exhibit also provides access to digitized 19th century maps of New Hampshire atlases and topogrpahical maps from the UNH Library's digitial collection.
