History:
Founded in 1866 as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts, the University of New Hampshire was one of the early land-grant institutions established to serve the sons and daughters of farming and laboring families. As a land-grant institution, UNH is charged by Congress to conduct resident instruction, research, and outreach to people beyond the classroom. In March 2, 1887, the Hatch Act gave federal financial support for agricultural experimental work and employee salaries, and permitted the College to set up its own Agricultural Experiment Station to benefit New Hampshire farmers directly. John C. Kendall, an alumnus of the class of 1902, was appointed Director of the NH Agricultural Experiment Station in 1910.
Although Kendall favored demonstrations to carry the work of the College and Station directly to farmers, he believed that some of the early station scientists spent a disproportionate amount of time on extension-type activities. Therefore, he vigorously advocated establishment of an extension program and submitted a request to the legislature for money to initiate extension work. The request was funded and, in 1911, the Board of Trustees appointed him Director of Extension Services in addition to his duties as Director of the Station.
In July 1913, Dir. Kendall and the General Education Board negotiated $7,500 a year to be used for farm demonstrations and boys' and girls' club work. These funds enabled the Extension service to employ full-time demonstration agents. The first county agent was M. Gale Eastman of Sullivan County.
The Smith-Lever Act, May 8, 1914, provided funds for cooperative extension work in agriculture and home economics between the land-grant colleges and the US Dept of Agriculture. These funds made it possible to organize demonstration work on a county basis. Care was taken, however, not to place an agent until a county farmers' association had been organized and had requested that the work be carried on. These farmer's associations were made third partners in the scheme of cooperative organization.
Extension work in Home Economics began in 1915 under the direction of Sarah L. Bates, who organized 14 clubs that had a total membership of 398 the first year. The following year, Kathryn E. Woods of Sullivan County became the first home demonstration agent. By 1917 there were agriculture agents in every county. Further funding from the General Education Board provided each county with a Boys' and Girls' Club leader.
Today, the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension has a network of professional Extension staff located in all 10 New Hampshire counties. Our staff works with local volunteers and specialists on the UNH campus to design and conduct educational programs that meet societal, environmental and economic needs. While many of our programs are conducted locally, we also use current communications technology including computer networking and interactive television. As part of the national land-grant university system, we also access the knowledge and expertise of other state land-grant universities throughout the U.S.
