Biography:

Joan R. Leitzel earned her bachelor's degree from Hanover College in 1958, her master's degree from Brown University in 1961, and her doctorate from Indiana University in 1965, all in mathematics. She began her Academic service career as an instructor of mathematics at Oberlin College (1961-62) In 1965, she joined the mathematics department at Ohio State University, where she served as a faculty member and administrator for 25 years. She served as associate provost at Ohio State University from 1985-1990. From 1990-92 she worked at the National Science Foundation as the division director of materials development, research, and informal science education. In 1992, she went to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), where she served as senior vice chancellor for academic affairs. She was second in UNL's administrative organization after the chancellor and served as the university's top academic officer. She also served as interim chancellor from August 1995 to February 1996.

Dr. Leitzel was appointed seventeenth president of the University of New Hampshire on April 9, 1996. She assumed full-time duties of the presidency on July 15 and was inauguarated on October 31. During the six years of her tenure, the University experienced unprecedented change. She worked tirelessly to raise the level of excellence in academic programs, implemented new and exemplary financial and fiscal management policies, guided the most ambitious campital campaign in University history and coordinated key renovations and expansions of University facilities. In September 2001, she announced that she would be retiring the following summer and returning to Ohio to be near her sons and their families. On April 19, 2002 she was awarded the Charles Holmes Pettee Medal in recognition of her contributions to the university.
