Biography/History:
Gov. Frederick Smyth was a Trustee and the Treasurer for the Board of Trustees of the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts from 1866 to 1897. Smyth started and funded a competition known as the Smyth Prize for writing, reading and elocution for students of the agricultural college. The competitions were held from 1881 until 1904. After Smyth's death in 1899 the prize money came from provisions in his will and then was funded by his wife Marion C. Smyth. The prizes ranged from $25 to $10. The essay and elocution competitions were open to the senior and middle class while the reading competition was only open to first year students. The agricultural college was founded in 1866 in Hanover, NH. In 1893 it moved to Durham, NH and became the University of New Hampshire in 1923.

Scope and Content:
This series contains essays that were written for the Smyth Prize in writing. They were submitted anonymously with the result that the authors and year of many of the essays are not identified. Identification came when the essay won a prize. The essays are arranged by year and then by prize. The essays which were not identified either by year or by author are at the end of the series in alphabetical order by title. See also collection UA 7/4/3 for the programs of the New Hampshire College Interscholastic Prize Speaking Contest.
