History of Granite Chapter of the fraternity Alpha Zeta

The Alpha Zeta fraternity, composed exclusively of agricultural students, was founded in 1897 at Ohio State University. The Granite Chapter of the fraternity was founded at the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts in 1903.
The history of the fraternity was introduced and compiled by Frederick W. Taylor, Dean of the College of Agriculture from 1915-1933. Dean Taylor gives a brief history of the fraternity; lists the members and their year of initiation; gives excerpts from "Chapter Correspondence"; provides biographies of deceased members; and a directory of those that were still living.

This series contains the minutes for the Executive Committee of the Student Government at the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts. During the years 1922-1924, the Executive Committee dealt mostly with the rules for female students at the school.
The New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts was founded in Hanover, NH in 1866. The college moved to Durham, NH in 1893 and became the University of New Hampshire in 1923. By the 1920's, the number of women at the school was growing and there were strict rules regarding their conduct.
Graduate Club

Although graduate study at UNH dates back to 1893, the administrative organization remained rather informal until 1928 when the Graduate School was organized. Dr. Herman L. Slobin was appointed as first director. It was the increased enrollment of graduate students in Summer School (largely made up of secondary school teachers and administrators seeking advanced degrees) that gave the impetus to the expansion in enrollment and services of the Graduate School.
The Graduate Club was formed by graduate students attending summer school courses. They met once a week during July and concluded with a banquet in the first week of August.

Edwin F. Bristol was a 1881 graduate of the New College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts.
This series contains a book produced by Edwin F. Bristol. It contains free drawings in a progression from simple to more complicated. There are also figures accompanied by their mathematical representation.

Herbert A. Warden was a member of the Class of 1896 of the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts. The College was founded in 1866 in Hanover, NH and was affiliated with Dartmouth College. It moved to Durham, NH in 1893 and became the University of New Hampshire in 1923.
This series contains the book of mechanical drawings created by Herbert A. Warden. The drawings go through a progression from simple to more complex. Included are also surveys done of the campus in Hanover, NH.

This series contains two midterm exams given in 1906 at the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts for Prof. Frederick W. Taylor's Agriculture II class. The exams were taken by A. Lawrence Dean and Simes Frink, who were students of the two-year Agricultural School.

Benjamin G. Odiorne, from Rye, NH, graduated from the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts in 1915 with a degree in Arts and Sciences.
This series contains two notebooks that belonged to Benjamin Odiorne during his sophomore and junior years at New Hampshire College. One contains lecture notes from his Entomology class and the other contains notes and drawings from his Botany Laboratory class.

Biography:
Stephen H. Boomer received a bachelor's degree in forestry from NHCAMA in 1921. He was an instructor in forestry at UNH for two years prior to becoming the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's blister rust control officer for Carrol County. He worked for the UADA from 1923 to 1959. He lived in North Conway for 30 years prior to moving to Center Ossipee in 1959 where he was self-employed as a land surveyor. He died Dec. 23, 1989 at age 95.

This series contains some notebooks and papers he kept from his years as a student at UNH.

Biography:
Harold M. Robinson, from Lowell, Mass., was a member of the UNH Class of 1930. During his years at UNH he was a member of the Phi Mu Delta Fraternity. He also played in the college band (one year as the leader), the orchestra and belonged to the Mask and Dagger.
Scope and content:
This series contains memorabilia from Robinson's years at college, including his invitation to become a member of Phi Mu Delta and a letter from the initiation committee. There are dance cards, class study lists, advertisements for the Isle of Blues Orchestra and band record kept during his year as the band leader.

Biography:
Bernard Ayers Lougee, from Pittsfield, NH, was a member of the UNH Class of 1909. During his years at UNH he served as the class photographer.
Scope and content:
This series contains memorabilia from Lougee's years at college, most significantly are many photographs of campus buildings and Durham places that were made into postcards. The collection was donated by his daughter, Justine Lougee Olive, UNH Class of 1938.
