Chemistry Department
(UA 8/4/1)
Size: 2.5 boxes
History:
The Department of Chemistry originated in 1868, when the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts opened its doors in Hanover, NH. Ezekiel Dimond was the college's first faculty member, as well as the department's only full time professor in the early years. In 1893, Fred Morse was the head of the department when the college moved it's campus to Durham. Conant Hall was built to house the science departments. In 1909, the Chemistry Department was turned over to Charles Parsons, and from that point on, the department has been headed by such well known professors as Charles James and Harold Iddles. In 1993, the department celebrated 100 years of Chemistry in Durham with a symposium, which was attended by many faculty emeriti and chemistry alumni.
Scope and Content:
This series contains records and photos of early department professors; records and photos of Chemistry buildings and dedications; records and photos from the 1993 centennial celebration. It also includes the minute books from the New Hampshire College Chemical Colloquium, as well as early alumni newsletters. The bulk of the material was collected by Paul R. Jones, Prof. of Chemistry from 1959 to 1995.
