Theater Department
(UA 9/4/2)

Size: 30 boxes

History:
The first student theater productions at the Univeristy of New Hampshire were performed in 1923. They were produced by the Mask and Dagger Honorary Drama Society and directed by William G. Hennesey, an English professor. When Hennesey retired in 1943, Joseph Donald Batcheller replaced him as director of the theater. Batcheller was instrumental in creating the Speech and Drama Department, which replaced the English Department's "Speech Division" in 1961. In 1973, the department was expanded and renamed the Department of Theater and Communications. The Communications division became a separate Department in 1988 and the Theater Division was renamed the Department of Theater and Dance.

Scope and Content: This series contains scrapbooks and programs from the Mask and Dagger and University Theater department productions (Subseries I), as well as Children's Theater, Summer Repretory Theater and Dance performances. Subseries II is comprised of photographs, slides (mostly color), and some negative prints. Subseries III contains posters/broadsides announcing productions, auditions, and season schedules.
