History:
Jackson Estuarine Laboratory, the University of New Hampshire's marine research and education laboratory, was dedicated on May 30, 1970. The laboratory is named in honor of Professor Emeritus C. Floyd Jackson, who established a summer program for marine biology and zoology students on the Isles of Shoals. Jackson Estuarine Laboratory's purpose is to perform research leading to a better understanding of estuarine and marine processes through the faculty and students of the lab. Originally, the lab was headed by Dr. Galen Jones. The laboratory's research boat, is the Jere A. Chase, named in honor of Jeremiah A. Chase, an assistant to President John McConnell. The vessel as well as the oceanographic research platform were originally supervised by Captain Edward "Ned" McIntosh.
