About Clement Moran

Clement "CM" Moran, better known as Centimeter, was an associate professor of Physics at the University of New Hampshire from 1914 to 1940. He was just as well known for his role as campus photographer, documenting the major events taking place on campus during these years. Moran was active in the Physics Department, where he taught courses in Elementary Optics and Electrical Measurements. Moran also made a contribution to academics through his pictoral documentation of UNH classes.

Moran spent the rest of his time documenting campus life. He considered himself a "commercial amateur," taking pictures for academic departments as well as providing shots for the yearbook, The Granite, and taking senior pictures for students for a charge of $.50 with an additional $.50 charge for a set of six prints. His shots were also used for publicity packets and some were made into postcards. The campus community was used to seeing Moran and his camera. According to one student from the time, "They're always on hand when the sophs dunk the froshs (or vice versa) on University Day: they keep record of the flashing movement of football games, they capture the smiles of our temporary royalty at the Carnival Ball..."

About the Moran Collection

During his career at UNH, Moran created between 14,000 and 15,000 images and negatives of life at UNH, documenting a large part of the University's history. These prints and negatives, a selection of which appear in the following pages, are in the UNH Archives Photography Collection.

The Moran Collection is part of the overall effort to catalog every image in the University Archives Photography Collection. In addition to the Moran Digital Collection, other collections will be digitized, and digital images will be available through a searchable database that is in development.

About the digitized version of this collection

The Clement Moran digital collection represents an effort by the University Archives to make the collection known to a wider audience. The images in this collection were scanned with a UMAX PowerLook 2100XL color flatbed scanner, with Adobe Photoshop on a Dell Optiplex PC. The display images are 24-bit color 72dpi JPEGs. Higher resolution TIFF images are available. Contact the University Archives for availability.
